Chapter 7

Sunday brunch with the gang.

Myrtle rose exceptionally early, not long after dawn, on Sunday morning. Lately she had been sleeping even less than usual because she was worried more than usual. Sitting up in bed, the first thing she did was check her cell phone on the nightstand beside her. She’d left it on all night and that wasn’t her normal routine, either. Most times she put the little monster on vibrate or simply turned it off. But she was anxiously waiting to hear from Glinda so she’d left the thing on. No calls overnight, though. Why hadn’t Glinda returned her calls and text messages? It’d been days since her niece had telephoned her with that cryptic warning, scaring the heck out of her, so why wasn’t the girl answering her now?

Could be Glinda had determined the vision hadn’t been what she’d thought it had been, and there was no world threatening calamity on its way, or she’d received another premonition that canceled out the first telling her–never mind–all is okay? Well, the young people were on their honeymoon after all, so let them enjoy it and be happy. Glinda would contact her when she had something more to say.

Outside her bedroom window, the sun was shining as bright as a star; she could see the gentle breezes blowing ground leaves across the earth. It looked as if it was going to be a nice day. A nice day for a Sunday brunch with friends. Myrtle couldn’t wait. She had become lonelier the longer Glinda and Kyle had been gone, so it’d be good to be with a gathering of friends.

Today she’d, all of them, would get to meet Martha’s new love, Gregory. What kind of man was he that he’d captured the ice queen’s heart so quickly? Myrtle, for one, couldn’t wait to meet him. A pretty good judge of character, she’d know right off if he was a con man out to get Martha’s money. The woman had had a few of those in her life and Myrtle sure hoped this new suitor wasn’t just another one of them. It was time Martha found love. Way past time.

Hmm. She had an idea. Frank was crafty at uncovering people’s histories so she could ask him to investigate Gregory’s past and his present. See if the gentleman was on the up and up. Yeah, that’s what she’d do. If that man had anything to hide, Frank would uncover it.

She shoved the cats off the bed and hustled at top speed, which wasn’t all that fast for an old woman like she was, into the kitchen where she first fed the ravenous cats, and then made herself a mug of coffee. She wouldn’t need to eat breakfast because there’d be plenty of food at Frank and Abby’s. Just the thought of getting out of the house and spending time out in the sunshine with friends was enough to chase away her loneliness. She loved a party.
